FUN FACT

The temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings. Warmer nests tend to produce females while cooler nests tend to produce males.

01 LARGEST SPECIES

The African Sulcata tortoise, the largest species in Africa, is known for its impressive size and distinctive, rugged appearance. These tortoises are known for their impressive longevity, often living 50 years or more in the wild, with some individuals even reaching over 100 years in captivity.

02 BURROWING EXPERTS

Sulcata tortoises are excellent diggers and can create burrows that are up to 10 feet long! These burrows help them stay cool in the hot desert sun and provide protection from predators.
